Preliminary notes for an exhibition: Photographic journey to forgotten churches of an idealized reality 08.12 ‘22 - 29.01 ‘23
The churches, frescoes and icons of the exhibition illuminate the history of the Bulgarian Christian communities, lost in the darkness of the past.
Moreover, these churches were built by forgotten kings with the ambition to shine and unite the Eastern and the Western world in the Middle ages.
Hundreds of years later these churches still tell as unusual stories. Lions, dragons and other fantastic creatures are depicted on their façades to keep them safe.
Extremely beautiful interiors reveal about rituals, that were forbidden by Byzantine politics and were forgotten. The roofs of most of the churches were later demolished and rebuilt in order to make them part of another tradition.
In spite of all these transformations, the communities of people living there gave through the centuries different artists who had knowledge about this distinctive Christian sensitivity. Each of them enrich the story, having left their own frescoes, iconostasis, icons. This exhibition is dedicated to them.
